Discover Positano!

What to see in Positano in one day? Like all the small villages of the Amalfi Coast, Positano it's a chest to open and squint for the treasures it hides. For lovers of walking through streets and stairs, Positano is certainly a fascinating destination and will not fail to meet the expectations of those who decide to immerse themselves in their daily life. Let's find out and get ready to write down some little tips and lots of curiosities. Positano offers many ideas to linger and get lost in the beauty of the landscape between culture and stops along the small road that goes down to the main beach of the village. Let's think about visiting it in one day and let's focus on what mainly to see. Are you ready to make an unspecified number of stairs and climbs? Here we go!

Sea and mountain

The city develops vertically and on four ridges of two gorges that rise almost to the peak, hugging the top and dividing the beach in two. Looking at the map, in fact, it is not easy to understand the distances between one place and another given the accordion effect created by the position in which the village was born. Places that apparently seem very close are actually divided by a continuous coming and going of alleys and stairways that will take more time (and breath) than expected. Only from a distance can one realize the complexity of Positano and many other places on the coast. Positano is definitely a city to live in, especially in the spring period where you can enjoy the visit by slowing down the pace and watching the tireless coming and going of local people who animate the streets and the numerous stairs during the day.

The historical center

We are preparing to visit the pedestrian part of Positano and we must not forget to explore lthe downtown streets. The ‘Positano Fashion’ here it reigns supreme, for over twenty years now the various boutiques along the road have created a unique style made of Mediterranean colors and fresh fabrics suitable for the climate that characterizes the area. Another special and particular production are the colorful ceramics that have marked an era and, last but not least, the handmade sandals open their doors to tourists and travelers and it is also thanks to them that you can experience the true essence of Positano. Through these streets it is possible to reach the heart of the village and reach the beach, the main destination of Positano and the ideal setting for a meal in one of the many restaurants or, why not, simply an ice cream watching the sunset over the sea.

The church of Santa Maria Assunta and its legend

Along the road, and the stairs, which branch off in the historic center, we meet the Church of Santa Maria Assunta which is very famous above all for its dome covered with colored majolica. The interior is simpler but equally striking, in a classic style and with columns surmounted by gilded Ionic capitals. Behind the central altar the Black Byzantine Madonna with Child, one of the symbols of the city and part of the legend that has to do with the name "Positano". The legend tells about a ship carrying the painting and which had a difficult moment right in front of what at the time, the 12th century, was just a small group of fishermen's houses. Struck by a sudden storm of rain and wind, the sailors tried to rescue the ship and among the excited screams they heard, as if imprinted in the wind whipping the ship, a voice coming from the Virgin represented repeating "posa, posa", that is, “stop, stop”. The painting was thus brought to the ground and placed in shelter, but during the night, it was found on a tree closer to the sea. It was thought of a miracle and on that point the church was built that today everyone can visit.

Fornillo beach and the Saracen towers

For walkers I also recommend the promenade that leads from the ‘spiaggia Grande’, the main beach, to the Fornillo beach. Along the way you can find many suggestive corners that it would be a shame to miss. The Fornillo beach it is smaller and often less crowded than the Spiaggia Grande. Here you can also see one of the many saracen towers sparse lungo la costiera costruite nel periodo delle Repubbliche Marinare per prevenire gli attacchi dal mare. I assure you that one day may not be enough. Positano will captivate you with its labyrinth of houses and postcard corners.
